Keeled Skimmer, male – Holt Lowes
It was the second day of village events on Sunday, with the Annual Horticultural Show. I managed to extricate myself from the proceedings over lunchtime and paid a visit to Holt Lowes, in pursuit of dragonflies – with the principal quarry being Keeled Skimmer. There were several of these pretty dragonflies along the field edge, as I approached the Lowes, and many more around the main pond. I also found Common and Ruddy Darter, Azure, Common, Blue-tailed, Emerald and Large Red Damselfly and my first Migrant Hawker of the year. White Admiral, Silver-washed Fritillary and Purple Hairstreak added some butterfly interest.
Female Keeled Skimmer
There was plenty of butterfly interest – including White Admiral
and this handsome guy, who I very nearly trod on!
Meanwhile, back at the Horticultural Show, Jane was busy collecting eighteen certificates of merit, the cup for best fruit and veg and the Basil Drury Memorial Cup for overall winner – well done Jane!
