Egyptian Goose, a recent returner – water meadow, Felbrigg Park

We’ve been in and around Peterborough for most of the weekend seeing the boys, so I was pleased to get out into the park for a walk in the late afternoon sunshine. The light on the water meadow was superb, catching all the colours of the assembled wildfowl. New in was a single Egyptian Goose – it’s been reported a couple of times recently but I’ve managed to miss it, until now. On the lake, the usual stuff, including a handsome male Mandarin – I later found a female, rather unusually, on the water meadow. There were two Grey Heron and a Green Woodpecker on the rough grazing meadow and, back on the water meadow, a handful of Snipe. A female Bullfinch was in the hedge along Red Barn Lane.

I don’t often mention, let alone feature this species in my blog, but it did look rather appealing in the late afternoon sunshine – Grey Squirrel
